Teak is a tropical tree from the Verbenaceae family. Its name comes from the Malay word "Thekku ".
The most common species, Tectona grandis (known as Indochina teak), is used most often as it is rot-proof and durable, making it a choice material for boat decks and outdoor furniture.
Today, teak is mostly farmed as it is endangered in the wild due to the disappearance of natural teak forests. India, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Indonesia are the main teak wood producers.
Teak is an exceptional wood favoured by cabinetmakers because of its fine grain and durability resulting from its natural resin : oleoresin. This means teak can withstand climate fluctuations and other natural aggressors.
The species is known for not getting termites or other parasites.
